Colorado Springs, CO – August 2011 – The Colorado Springs Osteopathic Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to Community Partnership for Child Development to support its I CAN Help My Child Stay Healthy Program.
This parent health literacy program is a product of the UCLA/Johnson & Johnson Health Care Institute, which designed the program for Head Start parents. Based on 10 years of implementation and positive outcomes, the program shows that a dose of hands-on health care training can transform parents’ abilities to care for common childhood ailments at home and save health care providers millions of dollars annually.
Some 10,000 low-income parents have already participated in the I CAN program nationwide, with extremely positive results. In November 2010 CPCD was one of 23 additional grantees chosen from the Western Region of the U.S. to join the program, bringing the total number of I CAN Head Start programs to 78. CPCD trained 132 parents in school year 2010-11.
“We believe that this training will reduce the number of unnecessary doctor and emergency room visits,” explained Chief Executive Officer Noreen Landis-Tyson. “This reduction also means that children are missing fewer school days and parents are able to be at work to support their families. We are so happy to have the partnership of the Colorado Springs Osteopathic Foundation in this effort.”
The Colorado Springs Osteopathic Foundation is a private foundation whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of our community consistent with its Osteopathic heritage. Curry Horak, M.D. and Doris Ralston, both of the foundation, were on hand to present this award to Community Partnership for Child Development.
