Local Blind Businessman Will
Read to CPCD Children
Colorado Springs, Colo. – March 1, 2010 – Community Partnership for Child Development will welcome Kevan Worley tomorrow to read to students in honor of Theodor Geisel’s (Dr. Seuss) birthday and the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day.
Worley, who has been blind since birth, will read Dr. Seuss books written in Braille to preschool students at Stratton Meadows Elementary school from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.
“This will be a great opportunity to promote Braille,” Worley said. “Only one in ten blind children are being taught Braille.”
Worley is the owner and CEO of Worley Enterprises, a food service company located in Colorado Springs that provides services to soldiers. Worley is also president of the local chapter of the National Federation of the Blind.
Community Partnership for Child Development has been actively promoting reading to children. Most recently the organization partnered with Pikes Peak United Way in collecting books and redistributing them to low-income children in El Paso County.
“Early and frequent exposure to literacy is by far the best way our community can improve third-grade reading scores,” said Community Partnership for Child Development CEO Noreen Landis Tyson.
The National Education Association’s Read Across America Day is an annual awareness program that helps motivate children across the nation to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
